Notes: | Label source: On the Llanos de la Fragua about 12km west of the departmental town of Zacapa in the central Motagua valley; on low-lying flat ground about 2km south of the Rio Motagua. Small tree to 5m ht. with a heavily branched open crown, Bark smooth,, green on on young branches turning dark blackish grey and becoming rough with age. Thorny. Most trees sparsely flowered, bright yellow petals, standard flecked rusty red fading deep rusty red and all petals finally tangerine orange. Very abundant in pure, stands in this low lying seasonally waterlogged area. Soil deep black vertical cracking in dry season with salt crust on surface. Stands are dense and extend to several hundred hectares with a sparse under-storey of grass, occasional Calotropis procera, and Acacia tortuosa. |
