The tree has fissured grey bark with blunt spines, some sharp on the green (though red tinted) upper stems. Leaves are discolourous bottle blue/green above and pale beneath. The upper side of the leaf rachis is purple red. Flowers are in a terminal, raceme. The petals are sun yellow, the standard with day-glow orange insect guidelines. Petals fade to orange red. Staminal filaments are pale green with a white indumentum.
