| Notes: | An additional box of rings/toys which became detached from board should be kept with specimen.x0Dx0AGerman lathe-turned toys : During the late 18th century in the Erzebirge region of Saxony an ingenious method of toy-making was devised, particularly for the, construction of Noahs Ark animals. By the mid 19th century, toy-making had replaced tin mining as the chief industry of the region, and Saxony became one of Europes most prosperous toy-making centres. Turned shapes allowed high productivity at low cost., Rings were turned with suitable grooves so that if a section was cut it resembled particular animals. The wide-spread popularity of these toys stemmed not only from their low cost, but also from their simple design. | ||||
