Notes: | Close to the road running south-west from Tehuacan towards Huajuapan de Leon about 10km east of the small town of Santiago Acatepec between Acatepec and Santiago Chazumba in rolling hilly country. Small multiple-stemmed tree to 4m ht. with a narrow dense, crown. Bark smooth, dark blackish grey with irregular pale grey lenticels in horizontal dashes, inner bark green with a strong smell of garden peas. Foliage slightly discolourous mid yellow green slightly glossy above, paler below. Flowers making a st, riking show, large rusty brown persistent bracteoles, calyx yellow green, standard petal pink lined darker with a small central yellow green blotch fading white at the margin, wing petals deep pinkish mauve, keel petals greenish at base white tinged pink,, staminal tube pale creamy green, free part of staminal filaments pale pink, anthers yellow, developing ovary green. Explosive pollination mechanism with keel petals splitting apart. Immature pods bright pea green, a few persistent ripe pods dark red b, rown. Common scattered in degraded dry forest with Senna, Ipomea, Bursera and Leucaena. |
