Notes: | Label source: Close to the small settlement of Rio Blanco which lies about 5 km south of the departmental town of Zacapa on the road towards Chiquimula; close to the Rio Zacapa. Large tree to 16m ht. with heavy branching and a spreading crown. Bark dark, blackish grey; granulated texture. Spectacular display of scarlet flowers, tightly packed along branchlets; flowers in clusters, sepals crimson, anthers cream. Flowering when virtually leafless with only a few persistent leaves on lower branches. Locally, common in highly degraded dry forest with Acacia picachensis, Caesalpinia pulcherrima and Thouinidium decandrum, otherwise rare in this part of the Motagua valley. |
