All through San Salvador and Guatemala Isa, w a curious palm with pinnate fronds, very spiny, the bases of which are persistent, covering the caudex of the taller trees - sometimes 30 feet high - quite to the ground. The natives call it 'Cuyal'. The fruit is edible, the rind being smooth and cortac, eous ? ...?... fatty yellowish pulp, which is quite hard; it is nearly round; each spadix bears a great number of nuts.
