Notes: Dunsmore's notes:x0Dx0ASa-ong Kayan (Kenyah) hat, 49cm diameter. Made of overlapping layers of palm leaves stitched together and held in shape by a rattan ring round the rim. A skull cap (selapok), interlaced from fine bamboo strands, with a turned-up collarf, or a smooth finish, is stitched to the centre of the hat, together with a circular piece of cloth. For details see Hose & McDougall 1966 reprint Vol I, pg. 214-215 and plate 45 and Sarawak Mus. occasional paper No.2, p. 14-15 zainic, 1969, 17-19. Munan 19, 89, plate 15 & 31, p. 51-55x0Dx0AImage of this sun hat in 'Sarawak Cultural Legacy (Chin & Mashman, 1991) - Ch. 19 (S. Dunsmore) pg 213 - plate 294.x0Dx0AKenyah sun hats are most commonly made from dried licuala palm leaves; although sometimes, but more rarely, P, andanus strips are used. It should be considered that this example may be made of Pandanus rather than licuala. Beading decoration could be more historical than the hat itself as it was often detatched from worn out hats and attached to new ones.
