Notes: | Made traditionally by Newars from Pyangaon. Originally they were made as grain measures, but are now used for storage. Gajurel 1984 cited by Dunsmore 2016 - The making of a pyang requires art and skill: after cutting the bamboo into sections between t, he nodes and cutting off the outer layer ('choya'), later to be used in sewing, the bamboo is split lengthwise. By soaking and heating, the rounded sections are carefully opened up and sliced into sheets which are formed into the required cylinder shapes, . Thee are sewn together with the 'choya' strips before the base sheet is sewn on. |
