Notes: 3 samples showing natural colour of bamboo, and smoked bamboo. [In Nepal] bamboo is smoked to protect it against insect attack. The bamboo strands are stored over the fire place for several weeks. The rich brown is used in combinations with the natural, colour bamboo to create many differerent designs. Madder for red, walnut bark for black and synthetic dyes of various colours (Indian direct dyes in powder form) are used by some [Nepalese] basket makers. x0Dx0A3 further samples of bamboo dyed with onion s, kin, and madder presumably personal experiments of the donor included.
