Notes: | Cudbear dye made by Robin Hill from lichen collected in Wester Ross, Scotland at the same time as the sample of cudbear in EBC 99208. Accordiing to David Hill the dye was made using 880 ammonia specific gravity 0.88, diluted by one-third. Lichen was put, in a jar to one-third full and dampened with ammonia to make a solution which was then put in an airing cupboard for a few weeks. [Cudbear is a direct dye of protein fibres. It was in great demand in 19th centruy. Cudbear was very important historically, in Scotland (Macintosh) re mauve but died out in Scotland due to over exploitation, it has now recovered there - David Hill, pers. comm.] |
