Notes: There is an early 19th century account of aged madder. David Hill noted that in the damp conditions sugars of the roots are oxidised with microbes however the anthroquinone dyes remain despite the decay. This process can occur within months but in this p, articular case the samples were stored for several years. The late Robin Hill (with Derek Rich) described the anthroquinones in madder in the late 1930s. David Hill donated Robin Hill's anthroquinone extracts to the British Museum via Vincent D. Daniels, .
