Notes: 1. Mat made of bits of palm leaf - rejects from preparation of strips for basket weaving. Catalan 'esporgins'. Plaited with long-ends. Used to keep feet warm when working in rooms/barns where no proper floor. Picture (p. 81) in L'Obra de Palma, Cistelles,, Graneres i Cordats, by M. Gelabert, F. Niell, A. Ramis, J. Sureda & P. Sureda, suggests it is a plait that is sewn. This would fit with local industry which is all based on plait that is sewn.x0Dx0A2. Raw material. Young leaves of Chamaerops humilis, harvest, ed in July & August. Young unopened leaves, pulled with special pliers. eaves are left to dry in the sun for several days.x0Dx0A3.
