Notes: | Display board showing stages in nettle fibre processing - Rough bark fibres, extracted fibre, and pictures of garments made from them. The same species Sir Joseph Hooker collected for Kew on his travels in the Himalayas in the late 1850s are spun and wov, en in Nepal into traditional mats, sacks and jackets as well as new types of textiles. Nepalese weaving patterns inspired by plants. In the centre, the national flower of Nepal, Lali Guras, Rhododendron arboreum. Below, a topi/cap with the rhododendron, motif. The nettle harvesting separates the outer bark from the pith. The fibre is then processed traditionally by boiling the bark with wood ash, then rinsing and scraping out the fibres.
