Notes: | Pomlazkas are made fresh every year from Salix. There are many intricate weaves ranging from 2-9 Salix strips. The handles show great variability and each pomlazka is topped with a variety of ornamentation depending on the region and whether it is made, for home use or for sale to others. Children have an easter game whereby young boys visit friends and locals (villagers) and ask to see young girls. They ask them for easter eggs. If the girl likes the boy, she gives him a colourful or ornamented egg, (often with intricate patterns, colours with strong regional bias). If she does not, she gives him a plain coloured egg. The boy is then entitled to symbolically whip her with his pomlazka for the plain egg. There is a rich easter heritage in the Czech, Republic of which Pomlazka is a small element. CH Stirton. 1.
