Notes: | This root is about the thickness of the forefinger, brownish-grey externally, slightly furrowed longitudinally, with a few transverse constrictions, each of which is marked by a crack on one side. The bark is whitish and spongy, and the yellowish woody m, editullium is divided into numerous linear wedges by white medullary rays, easily discernible by the naked eye. The odour is somewhat earthy and the taste very bitter. In appearance and structure the root resembles that of some of the sp of Aristolochia, , used under the name of guaco in S America. Possibly it may be the root is of Aristolochia acuminata, Lam. the only species at present described as a native of Madagascar (See Baker ' Fl. Mauritius', p322). The root is used for indigestion, and is said, to act as a purge. |
