Notes: | (Marchesettia spongioides, Hanck). Received from the Herbarium 24.02.1910. A remarkable example of an animal and vegetable living together in symbiosis. Ceratodictyon is a marine alga which is only known as growing in association with various specias o, f sponge. The alga, a member of the Rhodymeniales, is composed of a much branched cellular system, which forms a dense network. The meshes of this network are filled up with the substance of the sponge and the whole plant is clother on the outside with, the animal constituent. The growing apices of the joint organism usually consist solely of algal branches. Geographical distribution - Indian Ocean and warmer regions of the Pacific. |
