Notes: | Label source: Four examples (three with other notes) Sierra Leone, four pods from JM Graf; Amomum purpureum, Dr Daniells letter 1/20 1854 (A. gran. parad Smith); Seeds of the fruit from which the plant fig in Bot Mag Tab 4603 as 'Amomum granum paradisi', was raised vi.6.1853 These fruits I feel little hesitation in referring to Sir JE Smith's Amomum grandiflorum notwithstanding that thay have not (now) 'greyish' seeds. The seeds however have certainly 'the flavour and warmth of camphor' as Sir JES states., I consider these fruits to be also identical with the bunch of two fruits attached to the top left hand corner of the paper marked 'Amomum gran. paradisi' in Sir JG Smith's herbarium and which fruit are excellently fig'd by Pereira in his Elem.Mat.Med. E, d 1850 p.1130 (see my note book 3.1423.) The fruits from which the plant fig'd. in Bol.Mag.Tab 4603 as Am. granum paradisi was raised are identical with these. DH. A specimen of this fruit at the Linnean Society is thus marked in the handwriting of Dr Af, zelius 'Amomum N:64. Massa-anquona' | ||||
