Sent by Sylveira rec'd from Lisbon (from note book) Mangle or Mangue is also called Paletiweiro, common on the sea sides where the branches bend down to take root, so that one tree spreads, thus for 5 or 600 paces and becomes a wood and harbour for multitudes of insects. There are 3 sorts; the above description belongs more to the black which I believe is the same as the Roxo or purple it is furnished with oblong shining leaves of a good gre, en, the wood close and with long fibres. The two other sorts vizo the branco or white and the vermelho or red vary only in colour. One of the sorts but I am uncertain which, is serves for dyeing black. They are used in building and very durable excellent, for knees in ship building and used also for spindles. It is so common as frequently to be used for fire wood. | ||||
