Notes: | Label source: See note books in Archives from Bowes for details Given me (Bowes ?) by Mr Keate Rec'd from Lisbon (from note book) Jacaranda Pao Santo or Holy wood so called from the many uses to which it is put, of the 4 specimens the 2 first are black w, ith the lighter veins inclining to red the other two sorts the lighter veins are brown but the darkest is the last they serve for furniture. Mr Taylor's decription says that two sorts grow both in East and West Indias white and black with shining leaves s, mall & white on the underside round yellow sweet smalling flowers the fruit of a singular crooked shape heavy but full of a light green substance used instead of soap or boiled for food. The white does not smell the black does and the wood is hard and use, d as a sudorific |
