Notes: | Label source: See notes books held in Archives from Bowes for details Wood from brazil rec'd from Lisbon. Sent by Syleira Mangle or Mangue is also called Palituveiro, common on the sea sides where the branches bend down and take root, so that one tree sp, reads thus for 5 or 600 paces and becomes a wood and harbour for multitudes of insects. There are 3 sorts, the above description belongs more to the black, which I believe is the same as the Roxo or purple, it is furnished with oblong shiny leaves of a go, od green, the wood close, and with long fibres. The two other sorts, vizo the branco or white and the vermelho or red vary only in colour. One of the sorts but I am uncertain which, serves for dying black. They are used for building and is very durable, e, xcellent for knees in ship building and is used also by the turners, particularly for spindles. It is so common as frequently to be used for fire wood. |
