Notes: | Label source: Letter from Tropical Development and Research Institute, CL Green, Dear Mr Lucus, I apologise for the hand written note but you will appreciate from the following that the matter is of some urgency. I enclose a sample of seeds represent a 3, 00 tonne consignment to Europe from Thailand. The material was sold as white pepper (now fetching 3000 pounds a ton). It is not any spice with which I am familar and the closest any of my colleagues would venture was that it is some form of pulse. Several, container loads are in UK docks and Customs are pressing for insect fumigation. The importers are relucant to pay for the fumigation until they determine whether or not the material has any value. Investigation by Kew would therefore be greatly appreciat, ed by the trade. If it is possible to reach a rapid conclusion please ring the following Mr Harry Winstanely CC Spice Ltd and Ms Sarah Bodington British Pepper Spice. Seeds identified as Ceiba pentandra |
