Notes: | Label source: Note - from PE Owen ASO Wing A Herbarium, To Museum, I hope you are interested in this snuff produced from the roots of Z. africana. The letter enclosed, to Gerald Pope, gives a little infomation on the snuff. Please note that in the letter, 'Nyanga-lady' is probably a misspelling of Nganga-lady the local name for a herbalist. Letter to G Pope dated 10 Jan 1990 from P Klockner - Dear Mr Pope, I hope I have to bother you for only one more time with specimen from me. I fail to classify the pla, nts of which the dried samples were sent with this mail. The 'Sneeze root tree' is quite a rare specimen from which a Nyanga-lady produces a snuff very irritating to the nose with a slight horseradish flavour. It is gained from scrapings from dried root., I did not collect any flowers or fresh roots of the tree. The branches resemble Zahna (sic) africana but in other ways it does not fit the description. It grows into a large Brachystegia like tree with offspring developing nearby. |
