Notes: | Label source: Mr Felgate, a gentleman who, in conjunction with Mr Walter Hill, has for some time past, devoted considerable energy and skill in testing the fibrous qualities of the indegenous weed Sida retusa, is now engaged in cutting the plant in large, quantities from the vacant lands in and around the city. He has already obtained several cart loads from small patches within the precincts of the city and as the field is very large we imagine he will have no difficulty in supplementing the quantity to, almost any extent. We have had an opportunity of inspecting some of the fibre produced by Mr Felgate, which possesses the qualities of extreme fineness and silkiness of texture; qualities which are decidedly in favour of its success as a commercial commo, dity. It may be as well perhaps to remind our readers that an order has been received from an English manufacture for 3000 tons of the fibre at 30 pounds per ton. | ||||
