Notes: Label source: Rope made from the fibrous inner bark used by the Germans for hauling heavy war machinery in 1918. Letter 330,1918: xii p.135 dated August 17th 1918 - rope sample, used for hauling a heavy 'minenwerfer', submitted for identification; letter, M.I. 6B (2) /2256 War Office dated 14.8.1918 Portugal House, Portugal Street, W.C.2 The specimen submitted consists of twisted strands of the inner bark or bast of the common 'lime tree' (Tilia vulgaris). Although perhaps of value locally where the trees, occur in plenty, it is probably not a material that would be preferred for the purpose mentioned, to Manila Hemp (Musa textilis) or Common European Hemp (Cannabis sativa) - the fibre usually manufactured into ropes and cables suitable for heavy haulage.S, imilar fibre is mentioned by Dodge ( Useful Fibre Plants of the World) as being used in Russia 'for making an exceedingly coarse kind of rope' and there is in the Museum at Kew a specimen of rope made from the inner bark of the same tree, much used in Swe, den and Norway for bed-bottom lacing and other purposes.
