Notes: | Label source: Sample of the leaves (2 bags) sent from Bot Station Montserrat. Rec'd Sept 23 1908 sent for examination to Dr Jowett Chemical Works, Dartford Oct 16 1908 (See letters 196,346, 377-1908) Specimens of P. racemosus Vahl., received from Montser, rat compared with type specimen in the British Museum by Mr Sprague 6.vi.08. See letter 196,1908 : iv p.41) The sample in this bottle is from consignment from Montserrat received Sept 23 1908 JHH Letter - Works and Laboratories Dartford Kent October 4th 1, 909. Dear Sir, I am in receipt of your letter of the 30th. ult.; we have obtained no further results from our examination of P. racemosus than to find that this particular sample yields 0.124 per cent of crystalline pilocarpine nitrate, a quantity insuffi, cient to render the drug of any commercial value. No differences were found in the nature of the alkaloidal content, between this drug and specimens of Pilocarpus jaborandi and P.microphyllus. As however, it is known that the yield of alkaloid in leaves o, f some species may vary as much as from nil to 1 per cent of pilocapine, the examination of a single specimen of Pilocarpus racemosus can hardly be taken as evidence of a lower alkaloidal content than P. microphyllus, which is the species chiefly used. In, order to determine this point it would be necessary to examine a number of specimens of leaves before deciding whether it would be advisable to introduce another species. In any case we think it would be better to introduce Pilocarpus microphyllus rathe, rthan P. jaborandi. Yours faithfully HAD Jowett |
