Notes: | Label source: Plant showing the penetrating nature of the roots. The seed was sown in a field at Cookham Dean, Berks., in 1892 and in May 1900, in digging for gravel the root was laid bare and fell out. The sandy surface soil in which it grew was 6 to 7, inches deep, beneath which was a desposit of gravel 7 feet thick and then chalk into which the roots had penetrated. |
