Notes: | Label source: Obtained at New Taj Stores, Brick Lane, London E.1. Known as Seim in Bengali shops. Opuscular source: To go with Lablab p. ssp p. specimens. Laura, I would say it was subsp purpureus - as to cultivar names I am not sure there are any reall, y. I have looked in Rivels and it is very similar to what he says is very close to Dolichos leucocarpus Savi. So it could be called Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet subsp purpureus cultivar 'close to that represented by Dolichos leucocarpus savi' but it would, be better to give it a definite Hindi name for that type only. I think Seim refers to a whole range. Rivels ( Rev. last Bot. Appl. 33:314-322 & 518-537) does quite well with the range of variation but does not formalise a classification of varieties. This, needs doing but would be a big job and should be done by an Asian botanist. Wealth of India 3:104 gives more native names. Sorry that's the best I can do. If you do not want the pods please send them back to me. They ought to be kept I think. Dr B Verdcou, rt. 13.03.1985. |
