Notes: | Label source: The plant is said to be difficult to grow in the Dutch Gardens at Buitenzorg and has been a failure. In W Java at Tjibo the plant occurs in the wild state but does not fruit. I am situated in East Java, Alas Besoeki being a coffee, tea an, d cinchona estate, and this plant comes forward in the jungle it requires a heavy shade and grows from 2 to 3 ft high, the seeds are first green and then turn to bluish black having a strong resemblance to pea berry coffee. I have not seen the plant in fl, ower here but it fruits here, elevation 2700 to 3000 ft, climate very humid, rain falls all the year round more or less. Tree ferns, ferns and orchids abound. |
