Notes: | Label source: Fruit of a very majestic tree known on the Isthmus of Panama by the natives as Cativa. I have seen the tree on both sides of the isthmus but in greatest abundance in the swamps along the line of the PRR on the Atlantic side. It is often 90t, o 100 feet in height with a straight and smooth trunk, with greyish almost white bark. The wood of the tree is of very little value having very little strength and not good for fuel although it is often cut for the use of the locomotives of the rail road,, but it is full of gummy balsamic substance, which does not help it to burn, and the wood will generally rot before it will dry. It is also quite soft and cuts and splits easily. I have good flowering specimens, which I shall communicate. The fresh leaves, of this tree are very beautiful objects on account of the pellucid dots and elegant form. The fruit I send now is not full grown. In Jan last I saw a tree loaded with fruit; I had it felled, but although the pods are nearly full size the seeds proved not, to ripe. The singular pods, when ripe fall from the trees, and the overflowing of the swamps floats them off to the rivers by which they are carried to the sea, where they are thrown back upon the beach, often within the reach of the traveller who is apt, to regard them as great curios.
