Dear Professor Oliver, Accept thanks for names of plants, the Potomageton was dived for by the nati, ves, it grew in a depth of 30ft. Laga??phloea ?? quite decieved me, it is entirely cellular, I can find no trace of vascular tissue, The plants were hurriedly collected from the lake in Oct. last 1877 there being an opportunity to forward. Mr Johnston one, of the mission belonging to this ? , as does Dr Laws bought the things to Aberdeen; the day after the packet was sent off, Mr J. called and bought seeds of the raw cotton and a hank as spun by the natives which Dr L. thought might be sent to Kew Museum., The solitary dark pod with a few rather large seeds is the ripe fruit of the ordeal bark tree which is well named Erythrophloeum, the bark sent had got rubbed and the peculiar portion consequently lost, a few bits retained the very red colour which is owi, ng to very minute red granules in the outer most cells of the bark layer. I sent two pieces which show this. I believe Laws had few books, and certainly not your Flora Of Africa he was working during intervals of sessions as a upholsterer to raise cash fo, r class fees, he is an A ? & M.D. ? of our university, some friends gave help in cash to get him forward.
