Notes: Opuscular source: Copy of Letter to JH Hillier, Museum from Robert Ingham Clarke & Co Ltd, West Ham Abbey, London E, March 10.1904. Dear sir, in reply to your favour of 7th inst we beg to acknowledge the receipt of the sample of Congo Copal and have plea, sure in giving you our opinion upon the gum. Copal Congo has become, during the last few years, an important factor in the gum trade and at the present moment we understand there are large quantities lying in Brussels and elsewhere. Its production is wo, rked we believe by the Belgian Govt and comes from the Congo district. The price unpicked and in its natural state similar to your sample could be purchased at the present moment for about 65/ to 70/- per cwt (The best white portion picked and cleaned re, aches 145/- per cwt). The supplies we believe are somewhat irregular hence price varies considerably, but the gum commercially is useful and is used in the manuf of varnishes. We regard it as a somewhat weak gum losing a considerable amount when run by, heat for varnishes.
