Notes: | Label source: Letter from Societe d`avances commerciales (London) Ltd. To Stafford Allen & Sond Ltd. 25/01/1945. Dear Sirs, Senegal Gum Arabic; As requested, we are sending you a short report regarding the above gum. As far as we know, the average crop o, f Senegal Gum is about 3000 tons. Of course this quantity varies from year to year. The general run of the quality is that represented by the grade known as 'Senegal Bas du Fleuve'. There is, however, a superior grade known as 'Grosse blonde' of which onl, y a relatively small quantity is available. We are sending you per bearer type samples of both these qualities, and as you will see, even the second superior grade is not as good as the Kordofan cleaned. In fact it is generally considered that the Senegal, Gum, although an excellent substitute for Kordofan is not quite as good. Anyway in the pre war period the total Senegal crop was consumed in France and her possessions where the Senegal Gum enjoyed and still enjoys a big preferance in the importduty. Thi, s is why the Senegal Gum is never sold outside France, and her possessions, although during this war few parcels reached this country after the capitulation of France. It may interest you to know that before the war, France regularly imported well over 10, 00 tons of Kordofan Gum annually, obviously finding insufficient quantities available from Senegal. We have no doubt that after this war, events will repeat themselves and, in fact, we have only recently received an enquiry from our former Paris agents fo, r offers of Kordofan Gum to France. If you require any further information on the subject we are at you disposal. Yours faithfully. |
