Notes: Label source: Tenax : specially prepared for surgical purposes and superceeding lint for dressings. Tenax has all the valuable properties of original Oakum but is a finer and better article prepared by special mechanical process. It is a light brown colo, ur with a tarry fragrance. It has greater delicacy of texture than Oakum and a superior capillary and anticeptic power. In surgery tenax is roughly drawn into wound shape then wetted and applied. All discharge is absorbed and any odour effectually destroy, ed. It is employed in burns, amputations, senile gangrene and abscesses. It is cheaper than most other dressings and is easily applied. Its superiority as a dressing has insured it for preferance in many principal hospitals, military and civil. (1880's)
