Notes: | Label source: Richardsonia sp (Lesser Striated Ipecacuanha). Label source: Spurious Ipecacuanhas: Owing to the name 'Poaya' being used in a generic sense in South American countries for roots possessing emetic properties, various drugs bearing this name, are sent to this country by merchants at intervals of a few years. Sometimes these meet with purchases, but their ultimate destination is involved in obscurity. None of them approach Ipecacuanha in theraputic value. Hence a description of their appearanc, e in a crude state may prove useful. The plants from which these Poayas are derived belong chiefly to Rubiaceae and Violaceae and one to the Polygalaceae. Those which have been identified in English commerce are three in number, vis 1. Psychotria emetica, 2. Richardsonia scabra 3. Ionidium ipecacuanha. Several other spurious ipecacuanhas more or less resembling these, have at intervals been imported into Europe but probably have not been distinguished from them except in one or two cases, in which a micro, scopic examination has been made. Of these I only propose to notice those that have been met with in commerce in this country. A large number obtained from international exhibitions and continental museums have been examined by Messrs Tschirch & Ludtke, a, nd structural details have been given in the Archiv der Pharm 1888 p. 444 Description of the various types follows see specimen. | ||||
