I see that the specimens are all of the clarified drug, so that it will of more use for medicinally purposes than for your Museum I fear. I obtained some specimens of both the natural and prepared dug, for Kew and have since sent some seeds there. They all belong to the cultuivated species, which obtains a lower price than the wild root. If experience shows that drug is possessed of valuable qualities, I need hardly say that the news would greatly inte, rest me. I should take advantage of what you say about other Chinese drugs Dr Porter Smith did much harm by leaving people in China under the impression that he had explored that field throughly; and the only corrections of his errors with which I am acqu, ainted are Dr Bretschneiders. In case there are any further notes on the subject which you are acquianted, I shall be very grateful if you can tell me where to refer to them. Hanbury Science Papers of course cover a good deal of ground and the copy which, you sent me will be of much service. The ginseng goes to today by parcel post. Yours very truely etc... | ||||
