Notes: | Label source: M 299-28 Sample of 'Carpaya Root' from Sierra Leone, Brownjohn and Howard Ltd Bartlett House, 9/12 Basinghall Street E.C.2 . The sample of 'Carpaya' root consists chiefly of stem and apparently that of Carica papaya. The name of Carpaya may, have been coined from the first three letters of Carica and the last four letters of Papaya. LAB 9.6.28. Opuscular source: Letter dated June 12th June 1928 - Dear Sirs, The sample of 'Carpaya' root transmitted by your Liverpool House as part of the con, signment of 63 bags from Sierra Leone referred to in your letter FGH of the 30th Ultimo has been received. I find on examination that this consists chiefly of stem, apparently that of 'Pawpaw' (C. papaya). This is a small tree commonly grown in West Afric, a and most tropical countries, for the sake of the fruit which may be eaten ripe as dessert or cooked when young and green as a vegetable. A milky juice (latex) exudes when incisions are made in the green fruit and this green juice contains besides others, ubstances a ferment to which the name 'papain' has been given. The medicinal action of this is digestive. The commercial value of the pawpaw lies chiefly in the product described, which as imported consists of the dried milky juice; the chief sources bein, g the Philippines, Monserrat and Ceylon. I am afraid there must be some mistake in shipping the material as submitted as to the best of my knowledge it has no commercial value. Perhaps Messrs Potter and Clarke Ltd, would give an opinion. Their address is, 60-64 Artillery Lane, London, and they are large dealers in botanical drugs and preparations. Yours faithfully Director. See Caricaceae Cover for copy of reply to first letter |
