(pp31-61) and miscellaneous notes, p44.: Large lentiform seeds contain much bitter oil, which is extracted for lamps. At Garimagus, I saw, a torch made by cutting up a single seed into cm cubical pieces and stringing on a beard of patina, in contact with each other. On being lighted they burnt with a clear light which lasted perhaps half an hour. These torches are useful for carrying abou, t from place to place for which ordinary lamps- merely of portion of oil with a cotton wick in a shallow earthen vessel - do not suit.
