Ser. IX 3 p.359 4.ix.20 JHH Opuscular source: Extract from letter from JPT Sauv an African king at Donikodun, Ca, pe Coast Mar.9/20. - Okoo a tree which grows to very large dimensions and yields the tstse fly or Hureiya in the ?? language. It grows in vertical sections like the sugar cane stalk with holes near the divisions from the exterior - hollow in each section, where the insects live until they gain wings and fly away. (A) is a piece of the ?? tree showing three of the divisions with arrow points showing the holes of entrance. At the times of packing the insects in the form of black ants are numerous. Letter dat, ed July 26 1920 Dear Mr Holland, I am sorry to have kept Mr Boodle waiting for the leaf specimens of Okoo - the ants you wanted seem to have disappeared. I expected to have bought the parcel over with me last week but was unable to get so far. In the cata, logue of the timber exhib., I found the name Okha as a native name of Eriodendron anfractuosum and thought it was what I wanted, but the leaves apparently differ. With the leaves there are a number of smaller stems than the one I left with you and they sh, ow well marked insect holes. I hope to call one day this week and then if a time can be arranged I could take you to see my soya plot at Chiswick. The plants look fairly well and would be better with better weather. I remain yours faithfully J North. |
