Notes: | Opuscular source: Letter to RBG Kew 2.12.1854. My dear Sir, the only substance which we have in the Kew museum at all like your Gum Zapoti is the juice of the Maperanduba (Of which I enclose a sp) a large sapotaceous tree growing at Para. You will find, this substance mentioned by Mr Spruce in Hookers 'Kew Garden Miscellany' vol 2 (1850) p 74 and 243, and also by Mr Wallace in 'Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro'. I do not think there can be much doubt but that it is sapotaceous. I there is a large q, uantity of gum zapoti in the market I should like to know who is the importer of it so as to procure a sp if it for the museum. Believe me Yours very truly A Smith (To D Hanbury) |
