Notes: | Label source: Described as rasins in the trade Letter 138.1916 : x.p.165 dated April 11th 1916 Dear Mr Macfaddan, I am in receipt of your letter of the 7th inst. together with the dried berries for identification. These are the fruits of D.lotus, the 'Eu, ropean Date Plum' or 'Black Date'. The tree is cultivated in India, China, the Mediterranean region etc. According to Watt (Dict. Econ. Prod. India) 'The fruit when ripe is sweetish and is eaten either fresh or dried, by Afghans and other tribes. The form, er bring quanities of it to the Peshawar bazars. It is sometimes also used in sherbet'. Yours very truly signed Director. They were described as raisins, in all probability as a subterfuge to get over some customs restrictions. |
