(Signature illegible) Letter 2. To Daniel Hanbury, Lombard St. From Reginald Clayton, Milland, Lipho, ok, Hants, dated Feb 19th 1872. Dear Sir, I enclose some bark samples that I cut from a tree in Queensland in January 1871. I sent them to Messrs Howard and Sons of Stratford for examination as to whether they were fit for quinine manufacture, and in the, ir reply they have kindly given me your address, as being will able to throw light on the matter. I have used the bark as a tonic for years and it is very generally used by the working class in cases of fever and ague. Merely chewing the inside bark. T, he tree is short, never much more than a shrub and the boughs joint in 4's the middle shoot keeping up and making a 5th if counted. I am about to return to the Colony again and wish to take back any info as to its value for bitters or brewers' purposes., I would forward a large parcel on my return if necessary.
