Notes: Opuscular source: Letter from Malay States Info Agency, 88 Cannon St, London EC4, to GRA Short, Curator, Pharm Soc Of GB, 17 Bloomsbury Sq, dated 16.03.1927: Dear Sir, Your letter of 7th to the Rubber Growers Assoc has been passed on to us, and in reply, I beg to inform you as follows:- Jelutong - This cannot be rightly described as a var of rubber, though an allied product, and obtained likewise by tapping. Actually it is an inferior Gutta Percha obtained from one of largest forest trees. It is used, not only in the manufacture of chewing gum - of which it bids fair to become one of the principal ingredient - but also to adulterate gutta percha and for waterproofing and insulating purposes. More specifically, Jelutong is the latex of a certain sp of, Dyera. The production in the Federated Malay States has increased rapidly. In 1923 a total value of nearly a million Straits Dollars past through Singapore, nearly all of which was shipped to the USA. In 1925 the shipments were valued at 2,934,552, -, 6621 tons, of which 6323 tons went to USA and of which 4554 tons originated in Sarawak, 1140 in Dutch East Indies. The greater bulk of commercial jelutong you will note is derived from Sarawak and Dutch East Indies. But in those countries wastage due to, deterioration is very great owing to crude methods of preparation and lack of transport. It is anticipated that by the use of standardised methods of preparation and by virtue of its efficient transport system Malaya will eventually be able to secure t, he whole of this trade. Sample. I am sending you a small sample which at present is all we can spare from our own museum, Yours faithfully HS Bau.... Publicity Agent
