Notes: | Label source: Enquiries concerning the identification of S seeds have been dealt with at the Jodrell from time to time since 1912 onwards. Mr Boodle always used as a test which distinguished S hispidus and S kombe from other sp the fact that, when dry s, ections of the seeds of these 2 sp are treated with conc sulphuric acid, the endosperm becomes brilliantly coloured with green. Other sp when treated in this way go yellow. If this test gives a true result we must presume that the seeds now sent are not, kombe or hispidus. Sections of seeds from the museum labelled kombe which were tested at the same time gave the green colour. Superficially the seeds appear the same as emini. S emini also fails to give the green colour with sulphuric acid. CRM 15.11, .32. |
