Notes: | Label source: Species from Caucasus & Persia, clone from UK. Grafted on the Quercus robur in Britain, and snapped off at graft in the October force 12 storm due to delayed incompatability. It will be noted that, in cross section of about 20 sq ins the, actual union was only 3 sq ins = 15%, so it was very susceptible to storm breakage. In future this hazard can be eliminated thanks to excellent research on propagation of hardy ornamentals, vide programme 2/86 at East Malling. This involves dark treatm, ent in May, followed by taking long, etiolated cuttings in early June, which were then rooted under fog. (vide Report for 1986, nurserymen to support this research (Q robur 'Fastigata'). This tree was planted in April 1979 and had grown to 21ft and was v, ery ornamental.
