Notes: | Label source: Pururame falls at western tip of the island. Steep slopes of small hill above Pururame encampment on opposite side of river from Maraca island. Open brejo forest on hill slopes and summits, main canopy 6-10m, emergent trees to 20 m. Alt, 200m. Orange clayey soils to 1m deep resulting from weathered schist, overtopped by a deep leaf litter. Understory rich in Marantaceae, Rubiaceae, Musaceae, Heliconiaceae; Palmae and Musaceae dominant. Dominant tree to 6-7m, diameter of trunk 20cm, thi, s first branching 80cm from ground, two resultant branches 8 and 10cm diam. at breast height. Bark greyish with a green tinge, vertically fissured. Outer slash orangish with yellow horizontal lines, inner slash white, slashed area smells of freshly cut, cucumbers. Spiral phyllotaxy, leaflets dark green above, slightly paler below. Young branchlets mottled shades of grey and white; young stems subtending inflorescences hollow, their inner surface a dark chocolate brown colour. Hollow part of stems hous, ing small black ants and their larvae; these ants work floral nectaries cultured on the fleshy pear shaped bracts subtending each flower. Flower buds greenish overlain by a dark brown, almost black, velvety pubescence, petals greenish-cream in bud (open, flower may be scented). Fruit velvety dark chochoate brown with a persistent green style. Plant not reported to be used for medicinal or other purposes. Photos, flowers in spirit, carpological and wood samples. |
