| Notes: | Label source: This consists of the woody stems, which are from 1 to 2 lines in diameter, with erecto-patent branches at intervals of about 1/2 inch on the main stem. The thin dull chalky white bark readily serves as a distinctive feature. The leaves, when present are linear, sessile and etire. The plant bears the name of tea of the Cordilleras and is very commonly used in the province of Atacama, where there is said to be hardly a house which does not keep some branches of the plant ready for use., It is employed in the form of tea for indigestion and diarrhoea. The taste is pleasant bur stlightly acrid. The drug produces for a time a sialogogue effect followed by astringency. The subject matter of Mr Holmes communications was further explained, by a no of illustrations thrown on the screen by the optical lantern. In conclusion the Curator directed the attention of the meeting to the donations exhibited in the Materia Medica Museum, consisting of the rarer specimens of the British and medicinal, plants that had been presented to the Society during the past year. There were also slides of the false Pareira brava prepared by Mr W M Holmes, and of the new cinchona barks and Aden senna prepared ny Mr J Hart of Manchester. These would be found re, ady for inspection under the microscopes belonging to the Society. A model of the Van Heurck micro-photographic camera, recently described in the pages of the Journal was also exhibited. 23.4.92. | ||||
