Notes: Label source: Not Digitalis lanata, probably D.ferruginea. Gathered July 10 1928 from the Drug Gardens of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. Glenolden. These leaves do not agree in structure with authentic leaves of D.lanata grown from see, d and leaves collected from a flowering plant. Flowers were present in this sample and on examination were different from those of D.lanata and agreed with descriptions of D.ferruginea. The flowers are now preserved separately with a few of the leaves in, alcohol, glycerine and water in a stoppered bottle. The histology of a leaf of D. ferruginea, work by WT Dewar. Upper epidermis in surface view - Straight-walled, stomata absent except for a few near the apex of the leaf. (D.lanata has numerous stomata on, all parts of the upper surface). Lower epidermis in surface view - Slightly wavy walls, stomata numerous. Trichomes - Few non-glandular trichomes. The non-glandular trichomes occur along the margins and to a lesser extent on the upper and lower surfaces, of the lamina in the region of the veins. They consist of from 5 to 8 cells. Glandular trichomes with bicellular heads and unicellular stalks are present. (Trichomes D.lanata are 6 to 20 cells long.) Midrib - An arc of pericyclic fibres is present beneath, the phloem. Only the middle lamella of the fibres is lignified. (No similar fibres occur in D. lanata.) Jan 19.34
