From 15th Jan Seychelles Letter Jan 26th 1917 - The cinnamon trees growing in the Seychelles have been identified there as being the same, species as that cultivated in Ceylon ie. C.zeylanicum Nees. The following extract is from the Colony of Seychelles annual report on agriculture of Crown lands from the year 1914 (Seychelles 1915) 'This Ceylon tree introduced by Poivre in the middle of the, 18th century was mistaken for the Chinese cinnamon (C.cassia) and no notice of it was taken until 1908 although it had been identifiedby this Department (Botanical) as far back as 1902.' Wehmer (Die Pflanzemstoffe, Jenna 1911 p.806) gives Seychelles cinn, amon as derived from C.zeylanicum var seychelleanum (without auth. for varietal name) and quotes chemical analyses of the product. He also summerises of Seyshelles cinnamon (p. 226) and in both cases gives references. The anatomical structure of the speci, men sent has been examined, but specific identification has not been arrived at. If some herbarium specimens (leaves, flowers and fruit) could be sent for comparison at Kew the specific identity of the material submitted might be obtained. LAB 25.1.1917 | ||||
