Notes: Label source: The gum is melted over a fire, mixed with charcoal, and forms asphalte. Used for fixing spear heads. Extract of letter from F.M. Bailey, Brisbane Dated May 10th 1892: Asphalte made of the gum resin of the Beefwood Grevillea striata R. Br. A, little screen of sticks is placed over a slow fire and upon this is put the crude gum (packet A) when the heat causes this to melt and fall among the embers from which it is raked out and mixed with powdered charcoal and becomes the Asphalte (packet B) w, hich is used in fixing spear heads etc.
