Notes: | Label source: Sample of 'Almeidina' prepared several years ago. Opuscular source: There seems to be but little doubt that 'Almeidina' is obtained from Euphorbia tirucalli Linn. (E. thepsaloids Welh.) A similar substance sent by Mr Gossweiler ? in July19, 01 described as being produced from 'Cusoneira', Euphorbia thipaloides Welw. helps to bear out this view, and likewise a note in Recue ? des Cultures Colonials Vol 8 1901 p. 347 See note in French. Apparently little was known of this substance in 1892 as, deduced by the following note (Dip. Cons. Rep. Ann. Ser. No. 1105 Trade of Hou?da 1892). There is a plant that flourishes in this neighbourhood called 'Almeidina' that gives off a sap supposed to contain some of the properties of India rubber. It has been, exported in small quantities but experiments with it never seem to have led to satisfactory results. For description of E. tirucalli see: Catalogue of Welwitches African Plants part IV p. 949 Flora Brit. India V p. 254 Manual of Indian Timbers, Gamble p., 591 1902 Pharmagraphia India Vol.3 p. 252 Dict. of Econ. Prod. India (Watt.) J.H.H. Dec. 1903. |
